Saturday’s Hockey

With the holidays upon us all but three teams took to the ice.

Pittsburgh Penguins v Carolina Hurricanes

3-0 

Matt Murray made 39 saves for the Pens as he recorded a shutout against the Carolina Hurricanes at the PNC Arena. Jake Guentzel scored twice, Kris Letang once and Sid Crosby had an assist on all three.

Despite the 3-0 deficit the Hurricanes never gave up and fought until the final buzzer, they just couldn’t get the puck past Murray on a perfect night for the goaltender.

Nashville Predators v Boston Bruins

2-5 

Patrice Bergeron recorded 4pts upon his return from injury, he also scored his 300th NHL goal.

Preds captain Roman Josi now has 21 assists on the season after his two in Boston during Saturday’s game. Nashville have now lost 10 straight road games.

Columbus Blue Jackets v Philadelphia Flyers

4-3

Cam Atkinson scored twice as the Blue Jackets won their third straight game. Meanwhile Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists, whilst Zach Werenski scored and Pierre-Luc Dubois had a personal NHL-best three assists. Columbus are now 4-0-1 in their last five games and 20-12-3 overall.

Flyers rookie Carter Hart made 15 saves and lost for the first time in three games since being called up from AHL affiliates Lehigh Valley.

Florida Panthers v Detroit Red Wings 

2-1 

Robert Luongo made 33 saves and Jonathan Huberdeau had two assists for the Panthers in their 2-1 victory. It was the 11th multipoint game in the past 14 for Huberdeau, who has 25pts (5g, 20a) in that span.

Montreal Canadiens v Vegas Golden Knights 

4-3 (OT) 

Phillip Danault scored his first NHL hat trick, including the equalizer with 1:25 remaining in the third to send the game to overtime. Paul Byron scored 1:59 into overtime to give the Canadiens an away win in Vegas, handing them their seventh win in 10 games. Carey Price made 23 saves.

The defeat saw the Knights’ six-game home winning streak come to end, though Brandon Pirri scored twice and Jonathan Marchessault scored his first goal in six games. Marc-Andre Fleury made a season-high 43 saves.

Los Angeles Kings v San Jose Sharks 

3-2 (OT) 

Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice upon his return from injury. The Kings forward had missed the last 10 games with an ankle issue. He scored the overtime winner after 2:29.

The Sharks’ Erik Karlsson will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Sunday after an illegal check to the head on LA forward Austin Wagner. The Swede didn’t receive a penalty on the play but Wagner did sustain an upper-body injury.

St Louis Blues v Calgary Flames

3-1 

David Perron had a goal and an assist, with Jake Allen making 28 saves to help the St Louis Blues to a 3-1 victory.

Matthew Tkachuk scored his 16th of the season, with Elias Lindholm registering his 22nd assist of the season and Johnny Gaudreau his 32nd. Mike Smith made 24 saves for the 22-12-3 Flames, who lost their third successive game after winning 12 of their previous 15.

Colorado Avalanche v Arizona Coyotes

4-6 

Brad Richardson scored the tie-breaking goal 16:21 into the third period after the Coyotes recovered from blowing a three-goal lead to win 6-4 at the Gila River Arena.

Conor Garland scored his first NHL goal and Richard Panik and Derek Stepan each registered a goal and an assist for the 15-18-2 Coyotes. Adin Hill made 23 saves.

Alexander Kerfoot scored twice for the Avs. Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon also scored. Phillip Grubauer allowed four goals on 16 shots. Colorado are 3-6-1 in their past 10 games.

Anaheim Ducks v Buffalo Sabres

Jeff Skinner scored his 26th of the season to help hand Anaheim their third straight loss. Rasmus Dahlin and Conor Sheary also scored in the 3-0 win. Goaltender Linus Ullmark made 40 saves for his second NHL shutout.

New York Rangers v Toronto Maple Leafs

3-5 

Mitchell Marner scored twice in the Maple Leaf’s victory over the New York Rangers. Andreas Johnson had a goal and two assists for the hosts, meanwhile Frederik Anderson made 25 saves to keep the Leafs in the game. They have now won three in a row.

On the other side of the puck Kevin Hayes and Chris Kreider scored, Neal Pionk had a goal and an assist and Alexander Georgiev made 31 saves for the Rangers, who have now lost four of their last five.

Washington Capitals v Ottawa Senators

Pheonix Copley made 35 saves for his first NHL shutout, extending his winning streak to four games. Brett Connolly had a goal and an assist. Matt NiskanenJakub Vrana and Michel Kempny all scored for the Caps who are 7-1-0 in their past eight games and 14-3-0 in their last 17.

Dallas Stars v Minnesota Wild 

2-1 (OT)

Alexander Radulov scored with 10 seconds left in overtime to defeat the Wild in Minnesota. Jamie Benn also scored, whilst Ben Bishop made 30 saves for Dallas.

Jason Zucker scored with 2:03 left in the final period to send the game to overtime.

Devan Dubnyk made 25 saves between the pipes for the home side but Minnesota have now lost their fourth consecutive game.

Winnipeg Jets v Vancouver Canucks

1-0

Mark Scheifele came to Winnipeg’s rescue once again, this time scoring the winner with 1:32 left on the clock. Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler recorded their 24th and 43rd assists of the season, respectively.

They’ve now won seven of their last eight, with three of them going to overtime. Scheifele scored the winner in two of them and got the equalizer to take it to overtime in the other.

Tampa Bay Lightning v Edmonton Oilers

6-3 

Connor McDavid became just the fifth player to reach 200 NHL assists before the age of 22.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins racked up a goal and an assist, taking his assists total for the season to 21.
Mikko Koskinen made 39 saves on 44 shots.
The Oilers have now lost three of their last five games.

Nikita Kucherov scored once and assisted four taking his season totals up to 16 goals and 41 assists.
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 25 saves between the pipes for the Bolts.
