Monday’s Hockey

With the All-Star game at the end of the week, very few teams are still playing. Today’s games featured just eight teams.

Nashville Predators v Colorado Avalanche


Pete Laviolette became the 20th NHL coach and second U.S. born coach to win 600 games as his Nashville Predators beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1. Laviolette is 600-399-114 with 25 ties in his 17 NHL season with the Islanders, Hurricanes (where he won the Stanley Cup in 05/06), Flyers and of course the Predators.

The Preds’ head coach joins John Tortorella of the Columbus Blue Jackets (603-478-104,
37 ties), who reached the milestone on January 10th.

Nick Bonino, Viktor Arvidsson, Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis scored for the Predators. Pekka Rinne made 35 saves between the pipes for the visitors, who had lost their previous two.

Alexander Kerfoot scored the lone Avs goal and Semyon Varlamov made 23 saves for Colorado, who have lost two of their past three and are 3-9-2 in their last 14.

St Louis Blues v Los Angeles Kings 


Jonathan Quick got his 302nd career win and moved into fourth on the NHL’s all-time list amongst U.S. born goalies. He made 33 saves in their 4-3 victory of the St. Louis Blues and passed Mike Richter in his 580th NHL game. Richter played 666.

Paul LaDue broke a tie at 9:53 of the third period for L.A, who have won three of their last four home games. The hosts collected their second win in which they’ve overcome a two-goal deficit at any point of the contest this season.

Mackenzie MacEachern scored his first NHL goal for the Blues, who are 0-2-1 in their last three on the road. Ryan O’Reilly scored to extend his point streak to five games and Jordan Binnington made 25 saves, but lost in regulation for the first time in his NHL career (5-1-1).

Minnesota Wild v Vegas Golden Knights 


Charlie Coyle scored with five and a half minutes left in the third period as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena.

Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves for Minnesota, who have won three of their last four games after losing three of four. Mikko Koivu scored his 200th NHL goal, with Marcus Foligno and Eric Staal completing the scoring. The Wild are 4-0-1 against the Knights and 2-0-0 in Vegas.

Alex Tuch and Max Pacioretty scored for the hosts and Marc-Andre Fleury made 18 saves. Brandon Pirri gave up a huge opportunity, missing the net from the crease.

San Jose Sharks v Florida Panthers


Keith Yandle and Vincent Trocheck scored nine seconds apart on the power-play in the third period as their Florida Panthers defeated the San Jose Sharks 6-2. The two netted after San Jose’s Evander Kane was assessed a double minor for high-sticking Nick Bjugstad.

Frank Vatrano had a goal and three assists, with Mike Matheson, Keith Yandle and Nick Bjugstad scoring the rest for the Panthers, who have won three in a row following a seven-game losing streak. Roberto Luongo made 27 saves and Aleksander Barkov recorded three assists.

Logan Couture and Timo Meier scored for the Sharks, who have lost three in a row after a seven-game winning streak.
