We went from a quiet night Wednesday (two games) to a jam-packed night Thursday (14 games).

Carolina Hurricanes v Buffalo Sabres

6-5 (OT)

Teuvo Teravainen scored with 1:35 remaining in overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-5 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center.

The Finn had two goals and an assist, whilst fellow countryman Sebastian Aho‘s two assists set a new career high, taking his season tally to 38. Andrei Svechnikov and Jordan Martinook also recorded two assists.

Justin Faulk, Greg McKegg, Brock McGinn and Nino Niederreiter also scored for the visitors and Curtis McElhinney made 34 saves for the Canes, who won for the 12th time in their last 17 games and the eighth in a row against Buffalo.

Jeff Skinner scored twice against his former club, his second coming with 56 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Marco Scandella, Jason Pominville and Evan Rodrigues also scored. Rasmus Ristolainen and Sam Reinhart both got two assists and Linus Ullmark made 24 saves for the Sabres, who lost for the fourth time in six games.

Pittsburgh Penguins v Florida Panthers

Mike Matheson scored with 46 seconds left in overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Evgenii Dadonov and Colton Sceviour also scored for the Panthers, who are 5-2-0 in their last seven. Aleksander Barkov registered two assists and Roberto Luongo made 29 saves in his 482nd victory, moving him within two wins of Ed Belfour for third place on the NHL’s all-time list.

Penguins’ Sid Crosby played his 915th game, tying Mario Lemieux for most in franchise history. The captain can set the record when the Pens face Tampa Bay on Saturday.

Jared McCann, who was facing his former team for the first time since a four-player trade on Feb. 1 that sent him and Nick Bjugstad to Pittsburgh and Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan, as well as three draft picks the other way, scored a short-handed goal for the Penguins, who have lost three in a row and seven of 10.

Marucs Pettersson also scored for the visitors. Kris Letang and had two assists and Casey DeSmith made 39 saves in place of the injured Matt Murray.

The Panthers are 5-4 in overtime this season, with Pittsburgh 4-5.

New York Islanders v New Jersey Devils

The New York Islanders handed Cory Schneider his 19th straight loss in their shootout defeat of the New Jersey Devils.

Schneider hasn’t won an NHL game since December, 27th 2017 and is 0-5-2 in 10 games this season. The goaltender missed 17 games with an abdominal strain and played five games in a condition stint with Binghamton of the AHL before being recalled on Sunday.

Mathew Barzal scored in regulation and  Josh Bailey scored in the fourth round of the shootout for the Isle, who are 7-1-2 in their last 10. Thomas Greiss made 30 saves for the visitors, who swept the four-game series against New Jersey for the first time since the 2014/15 season. They are also 15-4-1 in their past 20 games against the Devils.

Kevin Rooney scored for the hosts, who lost for the third time in four games. Schneider, making his first start since Dec. 14, 2018, made 27 saves.

Los Angeles Kings v Philadelphia Flyers

3-2 (SO) 

The Philadelphia Flyers’ eight-game win streak came to end after a 3-2 shootout loss L.A. Kings.

Jakub Voracek scored with 18 seconds left in the third with goalie Anthony Stolarz pulled for the extra attacker, sending the game to overtime and eventually the shootout. Sean Couturier scored the other regulation goal for the hosts. Stolarz made 37 saves.

Austin Wagner and Adrian Kempe scored for the Kings, who are 5-2-0 in their last seven. Jonathan Quick made 30 saves in regulation.

Tyler Toffoli scored the deciding goal in the sixth round of the shootout for the L.A. Kings, who won their third successive game. It was his first goal in 11 shootout attempts.

Ilya Kovalchuk and Adrian Kempe also converted penalties for Los Angeles and Claude Giroux and Nolan Patrick scored for Philly in the tiebreaker.

Colorado Avalanche v Washington Capitals

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his second goal of the game with 48 seconds left in overtime to give the reigning champions a 4-3 win against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Russian, who also had an assist, took a pass from Alex Ovechkin, skated in on a breakaway and beat avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov five-hole.

Andre Burakovsky also scored for Washington, Matt Niskanen had a goal and an assist, Ovechkin had two assists and Pheonix Copley made 34 saves for the hosts, who have won three of four after losing seven in a row.

Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Colin Wilson scored, Gabriel Landeskog registered two assists and Varlamov made 38 saves for Colorado, who have lost five in a row and 15 in 18 (3-12-3).

Winnipeg Jets v Montreal Canadiens

Jonathan Drouin and Phillip Danault recorded four points each for the Montreal Canadiens in their 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Drouin scored the hosts’ first two goals and had an assisted two of the third-period goals for his first four-point game in the NHL. Danault had assists on Drouin‘s goals and on Shea Weber‘s before scoring at 11:22 of the third, it’s his second four-point game in the league.

Carey Price made 32 saves for his seventh consecutive win and Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored in his fourth straight game for the Canadiens, who have won eight in ten and had a season-high 53 shots on goal.

Mark Scheifele and Brendan Lemieux scored and Connor Hellebuyck made 48 saves, including 18 in the first and 17 in the second for Winnipeg. Scheifele‘s score was his Jets-leading 27th goal.

Anaheim Ducks v Ottawa Senators

Anders Nilsson made 45 saves for the Ottawa Senators to deny the Anaheim Ducks in their 4-0 victory at Canadien Tire Centre. It was his first shutout with the Sens and fifth in the NHL.

Matt Duchene scored twice, Brady Tkachuk also scored and Mark Stone had a goal and an assist for Ottawa, who ended a five-game losing streak.

Anaheim’s goaltender John Gibson allowed two goals on 24 shots but didn’t return for the third period after colliding with teammate Jaycob Megna late in the second. He was replaced by Chad Johnson, who made nine saves on 10 shots.

The Ducks lost their sixth consecutive game and are 2-15-3 in their last 20.

Vegas Golden Knights v Detroit Red Wings

Jonathan Marchessault scored twice for the Vegas Golden Knights in their 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

William Karlsson also scored an recorded an assist and Brayden McNabb netted the fourth for the Knights, who have won two in a row after a four-game losing streak. Marc-Andre Fleury made 36 saves.

Gustav Nyqvist, Michael Rasmussen and Thomas Vanek scored for Detroit, who were trying to match its season-best of a four-game win streak. Dylan Larkin assisted two goals and Jimmy Howard made 28 saves.

Brayden Schenn scored the only goal of the game with 59 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the St Louis Blues their fourth straight victory and eighth in 11.

Jordan Binnington made 32 saves for the Blues in their 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lighting and Amalie Arena.

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 38 saves for the Bolts, who lost consecutive games past regulations and are 2-0-2 in their last four games.

Dallas Stars v Nashville Predators

Ryan Johansen scored 43 seconds into overtime to lift the Nashville Predators to a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars, ending the Texas side’s five-game winning streak.

Craig Smith and Viktor Arvidsson scored in regulation for Nashville, who have won five of their last six. Jusse Saros made 27 saves.

Miro Heiskanen and Taylor Fedun netted for the Stars and Anton Khudobin made 21 saves.

Edmonton Oilers v Minnesota Wild

The Edmonton Oilers avoided a seventh successive loss with a 4-1 victory against Minnesota Wild.

Darnell Nurse, Ty Rattie and Leon Draisaitl scored, Zack Kassian had a goal and an assist, Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each recorded two assists and Cam Talbot made 35 saves for Edmonton.

Joel Eriksson Ek scored the consolation for Minnesota, who have lost four in a row. Devan Dubnyk made 19 saves.

Vancouver Canucks v Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks won their sixth in a row with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Jonathan Toews won it with 1:39 seconds remaining in overtime. He now has 12pts (6g,6a) in a six-game point streak. Meanwhile Patrick Kane had an assist to extend his point streak to 13 games, the longest active streak in the NHL.

Alex DeBrincat scored a double, Brandon Saad also scored, Dylan Strome had three assists and Collin Delia made 40 saves for the Blackhawks, who are on their longest winning streak since they won seven consecutively from Feb.19-March 4, 2017.

Josh Leivo had a goal and two assists for Vancouver, with Alex Biega and Elias Pettersson also scoring. Pettersson joined an elite list of 10 players who have scored at least 25 goals in 44 games before their 21st birthday.

Jacob Markstrom made 31 saves for the Canucks, who lost their third game in a row.

San Jose Sharks v Calgary Flames

Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl each scored two goals and had an assist, with Brent Burns scoring shorthanded and recording two assists for the San Jose Sharks in their fourth straight win, a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames. Martin Jones made 36 saves.

The victory sees the Sharks move within two points of first-placed Calgary in the Pacific Division.

Mark Jankowski and TJ Brodie scored for the hosts, who lost for the third time in 12 games.

Mike Smith made 21 saves on 24 shots for the Flames after entering the game at 13:42 of the first period in relief of David Rittich, who allowed two goals on six shots.

Josh Anderson had a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets in their 4-2 win against the Arizona Coyotes.

Boone Jenner had a goal and an assist, Lukas Sedlak and David Savard scored and Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves for Columbus, who have won two in a row after losing five straight.

Jordan Oesterle scored one and assisted another, Conor Garland also netted one and Darcy Kuemper made 29 saves for the Coyotes, who have lost a season-high five in a row after going 6-1-1 in their previous eight.
