Wednesday’s Champions League

Both fixtures saw goalless first legs, and with everything on the line they did not disappoint in the second with 10 goals, 6 of which came at the Nou Camp.

FC Barcelona v Lyon

5-1 (5-1 agg)

Lionel Messi scored twice and assisted another two to help Barcelona reach the Champions League quarter-finals for a record 12th consecutive season.

The Argentinian opened the scoring with a penalty, before Philippe Coutinho scored a rare emptynetter after a selfless pass from Luis Suarez.

Lyon’s Lucas Tousart gave the Ligue 1 side some home when he smashed one home on the volley.

Messi scored his second of the night with a run and finish before assisting late goals from Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele.

With the quarter-finals draw on Friday the Spanish side could go up against Ajax, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Porto or Tottenham.

Bayern Munich v Liverpool

1-3 (1-3 agg)

Sadio Mane‘s two goals lifted Liverpool to a 3-1 victory over Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the second season in a row.

On a wet night in Munich neither side created many clear cut chances, with both teams guilty of giving away possession too easily and often.

The Reds were the slightly more cutting edge side and took the lead in the 26th minute when Mane displayed an exquisite touch to reel in Virgil Van Dijk‘s cross before firing into an empty net after Manuel Neuer had rushed from his goal.

At that moment in the game the Bundesliga side needed at least two goals to win, they managed to pull one back when Joel Matip turned the ball into his own net from close range.

Van Dijk all but ensured Liverpool’s place in the last eight when he hit home James Milner‘s corner, before Mane capped off an excellent display with a header six minutes from time.

Liverpool’s victory sees all four English teams advance to the next round.
